Nevada residents are being told to check their refrigerators and freezers after more than 85,000 bags of shrimp with potential radioactive contamination were recalled. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the notice on Sunday for three types of shrimp sold at Kroger stores in 31 states.
contain traces of cesium-317, which comes from nuclear fission
These bags of shrimp potentially contain traces of cesium-317, which comes from nuclear fission and is often used for medical devices. Some of the possible issues stemming from interaction with cesium-317 are burns, radiation sickness, and the risk of developing cancer with long-term exposure.
The FDA already found traces of the same isotope in August when testing frozen shrimp from Indonesia, which led to a major recall from Walmart and the start of an investigation into the producer. The latest batch was sold between June 12 and September 17 in Kroger stores under the Aquastar brand name. People who have the shrimp in their possession are told to either dispose of them or go to the store for a refund.
