A tragic case

More information is coming to light about the man who shot dead four people before taking his own life in New York City on Monday. Shane Tamura entered a skyscraper in Manhattan and attempted to make his way to the level that housed the NFL’s headquarters, opening fire along the way.

In a message found on his body, the 27-year-old said that he was suffering with concussions-related chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the brain injury that has led to a reported $1bn lawsuit settlement by the NFL in 2015.

Tamura was a running back in high school and wants his brain to be studied after his death. He was placed on psychiatric holds in 2022 and 2024, with law enforcement believing that he could be a threat to people and himself.

Now, further information has tied Tamura to casino crime.

Red Rock trespassing incident

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) are assisting the NYPD with its investigation and is gathering information about the attacker. Initial reports mentioned how Tamura didn’t have a criminal history and possessed a concealed carry permit for a firearm.

trespassing charge never appeared on his criminal record as the case was dropped

It has now come to light that Tamura was arrested in September 2023 following an incident at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa. The trespassing charge never appeared on his criminal record as the case was dropped the following month.

The arrest report describes how Tamura refused to show his ID when playing a table game at the property and staff asked him to leave. When Tamura went to the cashier cage to try cash out his winnings, he once again refused to show identification and would not leave without getting his money.

The native grabbed a security officer before authorities detained him. While he gave his ID eventually to officers, he still wouldn’t exit the property and this led to his arrest.

Working at a Caesars property

Tamura had other links to the casino scene, as he worked in the Horseshoe Las Vegas surveillance department. He got a license in 2019 to secure employment as a private security officer in the state of Nevada, a permit that expired in December.

People on social media questioned how Tamura was able to continue working in security despite having a history of psychiatric illness.
