Two people are dead and several more are injured after a man opened fire outside the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada, on Monday morning. Multiple people, including the shooter, were transported to a local hospital; the condition of injured survivors is not known at this time.
Scant details of the tragedy have been made public. According to the Reno Police Department, officers responded to a report of an active shooter at Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) at approximately 7:25am Monday. Officers arrived in less than three minutes and immediately spotted the suspect, “at which time an officer involved shooting occurred.”
The suspect was then taken into custody and transported to the hospital. Police ask that people avoid the casino’s west parking lot, as the investigation is still active.
A few people were treated for minor injuries at the scene and did not need hospitalization.
saw a man clutch his stomach and fall to the ground
One witness told the Associated Press he was about to leave his room and get his car at the valet when he heard gunshots, or what he called “popping sounds.” When he looked out the window, he saw people fleeing the valet area. He added that he saw a man clutch his stomach and fall to the ground, motionless.
“A half hour after the incident I started shaking because I realized I could’ve been there,” Michael Sisco said. “That’s exactly where I was going.”
“We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that occurred in our parking area earlier today,” the Grand Sierra Resort told the Reno Gazette Journal.
“We are incredibly grateful for the swift and courageous response by our armed security team, whose immediate actions helped prevent further harm,” the GSR added. “We also want to thank the Reno Police Department for their rapid assistance and coordination, which was instrumental in quickly eliminating the threat and protecting lives.”
Police have yet to release the suspect’s name or possible motive.
