Uber is getting into the robotaxi game, committing $300m to buy at least 20,000 Lucid vehicles that have built-in self-driving technology from Nuro. The plan is to roll out the service over the next six years, starting with a single US city in 2026.

adds to Uber’s existing relationships with other firms in the space

Nuro has been testing its self-driving technology on a closed track in Las Vegas. The agreement adds to Uber’s existing relationships with other firms in the space, including Aurora and Waymo.

The race for driverless robotaxis is heating up, with Waymo operating autonomous taxi services in multiple cities, and Tesla planning to follow suit in the coming months.

Talking about the deal with Nuro and Lucid, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi spoke about how “Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities for the better.”
