A man’s commitment to his chosen lottery numbers has paid dividends as he won $1m on two different tickets with the same combinations. The Massachusetts Lottery posted a photo of Fitchburg resident Paul Corcoran with his check for $2m after the July 9 Powerball draw.

It turns out that buying two tickets wasn’t part of his original plan. Corcoran mistakenly believed that his first ticket was for an already declared draw, so he proceeded to buy another.
He successfully matched all the five white balls and proceeded to collect those winnings two days later at the lottery headquarters in Dorchester. He’ll have to pay about $480,000 in federal withholding tax and approximately $100,000 in state tax on the lump sum, leaving him with the guts of $1.4m.
Corcoran was delighted with the win and is still figuring out what he’s going to do with the money.
