Murders down 33%
Despite the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reporting two overnight murders on the back of multiple recent high-profile homicides in Sin City, Metro has reported a 33% drop in murders over 2024.
two murders Tuesday
The LVMPD reported two murders on Tuesday, one resulting from a domestic conflict in the east valley earlier the same day, the other from a shooting in the northwest valley on Monday night. Reports state both incidents occurred “within hours” of each other.
Metro has flagged the domestic homicide incident as self-defence, after an argument between a man and woman led to another man getting involved. Both male antagonists were left with gunshot wounds, one fatal.
Vegas has been hit with multiple high-profile murders since June, but as fresh LVMPD stats reveal, the federal crime is down in the US gambling capital.
Not how it looks
Since June, Vegas has awoken to headlines about highly publicized murders, starting with the Hollywood-movie-like slaying of two content creators backdropped by the busy Bellagio Fountains.
On the same night Sin City Manny gunned down the two victims, another two shooting incidents occurred. One was fatal and involved two teenage males. The other involved a woman who reportedly couldn’t take a joke, and who the LVMPD have since arrested and charged with attempted murder after she fired shots into a group on June 8.
31 of the 45 deaths (33 and 47 after Tuesday) were caused by gunshots
When an allegedly intoxicated man in an electric wheelchair pulled a gun on a Dotty’s bartender after not getting served a shot, Vegas locals started to question the perceived rise in gun violence on social media. However, while 31 of the 45 deaths (33 and 47 after Tuesday) were caused by gunshots, LVMPD stats released this week showed the murder rate in Vegas has actually dropped from the 2024 figure of 67 murders.
The shootings on the night of June 8 might have gotten all the media attention, but the coroner was only called out to six fatalities that month. The bloodiest month, according to the charts, was October 2024 with 15 murders.
Domestic conflict tops stats
According to Metro, the leading cause of murders in its jurisdiction is domestic violence, with 14 cases over 11 in 2024.
The LVMPD included “altercation–drug or alcohol included, crime, robbery, and sexual jealousy” and – “altercation–perceived disrespect” – as the other four factors behind the domestic violence murders.
