Australia’s media watchdog has warned influencers that they face fines as high as AU$2.5m (US$1.6m) if they are caught promoting illegal gambling sites.

While online sports betting is licensed nationwide, there are no legal online casinos. This has led to a rise in the number of influencers on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok showcasing content from offshore gambling sites.

an uptick in live streaming on unregulated platforms

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has seen an uptick in live streaming on unregulated platforms, with content creators often running giveaways and embedding affiliate links for viewers. In its press release, the ACMA told influencers that they are breaking the law if they are profiting “from promoting illegal games and wagering services to Australians.”

Dangers associated with using offshore unregulated platforms include a lack of consumer protection, poor data security, and loss of funds. The ACMA highlighted how young Australians who follow these influencers are particularly vulnerable to the content.
