Downtown Las Vegas Erupts as Protestors, Police Clash Over ICE 

  • Cops out in force Wednesday as anti-ICE protestors gathered in downtown Vegas
  • LVMPD allegedly shot tear gas causing “people to start running and screaming”
  • The protest comes after similar action in LA which has led to a curfew being imposed

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) and protestors have clashed in downtown Sin City overnight with cops firing projectiles and tear gas. 

The LVMPD was out in force Wednesday as hundreds of protestors gathered in downtown Vegas. The crowds arrived to protest the Trump administration’s unleashing of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement body on illegal immigrants in Los Angeles.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “tear gas was deployed as several hundred people gathered and marched in downtown Las Vegas.” The LVMPD on multiple social media channels dubbed the protests an “unlawful assembly” while issuing a dispersal order and threatening arrest.

Reports state the protesting crowd gathered “at the corner of South Las Vegas Boulevard and East Clark Avenue.” The LVR-J stated that the LVMPD shot tear gas into the protestors, which caused “people to start running and screaming.”

A protest organizer from Henderson, Stephanie Gentry, told the media the action in Vegas was in part to show “solidarity” with LA. Gentry stated ICE violence in California “was a violation of human rights.” She was making reference to recent protests in Los Angeles over similar ICE action. A curfew has been imposed for the second night in the California city.

One of the Las Vegas protestors, Serenity Vasquez, 19, said she attended the movement to support immigrant communities. “We wanted to come out peacefully tonight to show that we see what’s happening and that we want to be heard,” she said.
