The WSOP is always a big deal, with the festival of poker growing more and more popular in recent times. This year’s rendition looks set to surpass 500,000 total entries across the 100 events, which would mean new all-time records for both prize pools and player numbers:

The Main Event doesn’t kick off until July 2, and already the registrations are on track to break last year’s record of 10,112, with those who paid the $10,000 buy-in battling it out for a top prize that could be upwards of $12m.

The 56th renewal of the WSOP kicked off on Tuesday with the Mystery Millions event. The overall event takes place between the Paris Las Vegas and the Horseshoe Las Vegas.

It’s the first time that GGPoker parent company NSUS Group Inc. will run the festival, taking over from Caesars Entertainment following its acquisition of the WSOP brand in August for $500m. Another first this year is that phones are banned in the closing stages of tournaments to ensure there’s fair play and no external communications.
