Underdog Fantasy is back serving customers in New York, only a few months after exiting the state and paying a $17.5m fine to the local regulator.
The New York State Gaming Commission ruled in March that the daily fantasy sports (DFS) site was violating state laws. This related to the license Underdog Fantasy assumed after acquiring Syknt Games in 2022.
paid the hefty fine, equivalent to the total revenue it made in New York
Its games were very different from what Syknt offered, which meant it was breaching local laws, as the games were required to be more or less exactly the same. While the company disagreed with the ruling, it still exited the market and paid the hefty fine, equivalent to the total revenue it made in New York.
The operator announced the relaunch on social media on Thursday, with users able to once again take part in draft competitions through a temporary license, the type of approval that is typical for the DFS sector in the state.
Underdog Fantasy is a popular option on the DFS market and is live in 40 other states, Washington, D.C., and Canada.
