The Encore Boston Harbor casino in Massachusetts has experienced its fair share of issues in recent years. Claims about underhanded tactics and lack of transparency during the license bidding process did the rounds, as well as the fallout from the company’s founder Steve Wynn resignation due to sexual misconduct allegations, issues with crime, and a class-action cheating lawsuit.

Financial results have also flattered to deceive since opening in 2019 and now the property is pausing plans to expand its resort because of a disagreement with local officials.

The work will not go ahead until “these issues are addressed with a financially viable resolution.”

Wynn Resorts wants to develop a new $400m facility across the street from the casino that would include a dedicated poker room, another sports betting area, and entertainment options like a nightclub and theatre.

The casino company revealed during an earnings call that it has yet to agree with the city of Everett on impact fees, improvements to local infrastructure, and property taxes. The work will not go ahead until “these issues are addressed with a financially viable resolution.”

Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria backs the expansion work and, in a statement, explained that he is just looking to get the best deal possible for local residents.

This isn’t the first time the expansion project was put on the back burner. Wynn Resorts paused its original plans in early 2022 as it wanted to reconsider the development following the legalization of sports betting in the state.
