The Chief Analyst for Google’s Threat Intelligence Group has confirmed that a hacking organization behind significant recent data leaks at UK retailers is now targeting US companies. This group comprises many hackers who attacked MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment in 2023.
In recent weeks, hackers have stolen data from UK companies like Marks & Spencer and the Co-Op Group, forcing Marks & Spencer to stop online purchases.
Google’s Threat Intelligence Group chief analyst John Qultquist told NBC News: “Major American retailers have already been targeted.”

These attacks are very similar to those experienced by US casinos in late 2023. During the 2023 hacks, MGM Resorts shut down some casino floors in Las Vegas, including Bellagio and Mandalay Bay. Casino guests also couldn’t access their rooms because their keycards malfunctioned.
Caesars Entertainment was also hacked, but avoided shutting down its operations because the company paid the hackers.
The National Retail Federation has acknowledged the threat of potential hacks, with Vice President of Retail Technology and Cybersecurity Christian Beckner commenting to NBC News: “U.S.-based retailers are aware of the threats posted by cybercriminal groups that have recently attacked several major retailers in the United Kingdom, and many companies have taken steps to harden themselves against these criminal groups’ tactics over the past two years.”
