A sexual assault victim’s family in the UK is urging a rapist to donate his £7.2m ($9m) lottery win to charity. Iorworth Hoare purchased the Lotto Extra ticket while on weekend leave from an open prison in August 2004. He has been embroiled in a legal battle for 15 years to try to get his hands on the money.

Hoare wasn’t able to access the total winnings as a result of his prison release conditions. The 70-year-old reportedly was getting monthly payments worth £8,666 ($10,836) since his 2005 release. The convicted rapist recently won the court battle to get full access to the money plus interest.

jailed in 1989 for life after the attempted rape of Woodman in Roundhay Park, Leeds

The daughter of Shirley Woodman, one of Hoare’s victims, has called on the man to donate those winnings to charity. Hoare was jailed in 1989 for life after the attempted rape of Woodman in Roundhay Park, Leeds. Before the attempted rape, he had six previous convictions for rape and other sex-related offenses.

Woodman tried to sue him for damages after learning of the lottery win. Her actions led to a ground-breaking rule change in the legal system, allowing the courts to extend the time limit in which sex attack victims can make a claim.

Woodman ultimately received £50,000 ($62,521) in damages and legal costs of £800,000 ($1m) from her attacker. She donated the money to a charity. That’s why her daughter Shelley Wolfson is urging the attacker to do the same so some good might come out of his lottery win.
