The kingdom is under attack and in desperate need of a fearless hero to save the people from certain death. This could be the premise of many fantasy stories, and it also applies to Diamond Dragon, a video slot game from Rival Gaming synonymous with an epic quest and some big cash rewards as well.
In this 5x3 slot, players will be facing many dangers and rewards in the form of free spins, bonus modes and extra cash prizes. The volatility is quite high, but the promise of up to 50 free games should be enough to convince even the most sceptical players to at least give Diamond Dragon a try. If you feel like doing so, check out our full review of the game before you start your quest for the jackpot.
Diamond Dragon has all the elements of a classic fantasy story, including princesses, knights and of course dragons. The action is taking place in an unwelcoming desert with volcanoes and lava fields in the background. The reels and command buttons underneath then and painted in red and the whole screen seems to be burning as you place your bets.
After closer examination, Diamond Dragon does not appear to be the most striking game in its category. We still got a very Game of Thrones feel from it, especially given the look of certain characters on the reels - which is definitely a good thing.
Diamond Dragon is played on 5 reels with up to 50 paylines at your disposal, which gives you many different ways to win. Use the arrows on the side to activate paylines and the plus and minus buttons at the bottom to choose the coin value on a scale from 0.01 to 0.25 credit. The usual bet max and autospin buttons are also there for those who like to take some extra risks.
Diamond Dragon has an average to high variance, which means that you might have to spin the reels quite a few times before you are able to score any win at all. On the reels, you will find card icons, four different characters in costumes, a chalice and a mysterious potion worth up to x600. As we tested the game, it became clear that the card icons were by far the most likely to trigger cash prizes in Diamond Dragon, which is a pity because they are the least valuable of all icons. The game does have some redeeming qualities when you factor in the different bonus features available, though.
All of the bonus features in Diamond Dragon are based on special reel symbols. The dragons, for instance, are wilds that can appear on reels 1 and 2 at first and expand to take up more space and potentially trigger even more cash prizes. The golden axes are scatters able to trigger up to 50 free spins, during which wilds will show up on reels 1, 2 and 3 with a x2 multiplier attached.
With the silver axe scatters, you can win 5 super spins with wilds available on reels 1, 2, 3 and 4 with a x3 multiplier. Note that silver axes can only appear during the free spins. During the normal game mode, diamonds can appear on the reels to unlock a simple pick-and-win bonus round, with some surprise rewards at stake.
Diamond Dragon felt like a bit of a challenge at first. Its relatively high volatility makes big wins hard to get, but fortunately its many bonus features are more than enough to make up for it. The expanding wilds are useful right from the start, and become even more so as you progress through the different bonus rounds.
The free spins were surprisingly easy to obtain, relatively speaking, and they quickly allowed us to win much more interesting cash prizes in Diamond Dragon.
Diamond Dragon has no real equivalent on the slot game marker, except perhaps other Rival Gaming creations such as Summer Ease or Wild Safari. Both are constructed around similar rules, but with a lower volatility as well.
