Gold Trophy 2 is a golf-themed slot. It manages to keep the retro feeling of the original version, without looking too dated. The main draw of this game is the free spins bonus round, which comes with a 3x multiplier. You’ll also get a 2x multiplier for regular play when a wild symbol is included in the winning combination. This is a low-intensity slot, which will appeal to golf fans. I’m not sure how wide the appeal will be for those who are not into golf.
Deliberately retro would be the best description of the graphics. The symbols have a plain white background and are blocky looking. The shading and small detail in the production give away the fact that this is deliberate. Animations are not too intensive, with nice touches like dollar bills flying out of the scatter symbols and the playing card symbols glowing when they form a win line. Sounds are not obtrusive, with the odd ‘fun’ noise (the golf-cart revving for example) and some standard golf like sounds (shots, balls going into the hole and so on).
This game uses the 20 line standard setup from Play N Go, with 5 reels and 3 rows of symbols on each. You get to choose the number of lines, your coin value and up to 5 coins per line. If you are playing max lines, bets range from 20c through to $25. Auto-play is available, and you’ll be invited to gamble any wins on the turn of a card.
It is the Gold Trophy itself that you’ll want to see. This is the wild symbol (substitutes for the regular symbols though not the scatter) and also doubles any win that it is part of. You’ll get 5000 coins for 5 of these in any position on the reels. The ‘winner’ sign on a gold background is another welcome symbol. This is the scatter, paying up to 200x your total bet amount (for 5). This symbol also triggers the bonus round with 3 or more.
Of the regular symbols, the green with flag and golden jacket are the best symbols, these earn you 750 for 5 of a kind. The golf buggy is worth 500 with the club / ball combo and ball on its own worth 250. Playing cards symbols, which are themselves embellished with golf signs make up the smaller wins. There are a lot of symbols for this game, though I did notice smaller wins were common, putting this in the lower variance range.
There is only a single bonus game, which is a free spins round starting with 15 spins. The reels stay the same, with your total and remaining spins displayed at the top. A cascade of golf balls fall down from above the reels (to the sides) while you play.
Every win has a 3x multiplier during these spins. If you also get the wild symbol (trophy) included in a win, then the total is doubles to 6x. This makes a big difference to the coins you’ll accumulate. If you get 3+ of the scatter symbols during this game, then you’ll add 15 more spins to your total.
I enjoyed this game; though have to wonder if there will really be much appeal among people who do not play golf? The game play is solid, rather than dynamic. I feel that a couple more features would be needed before I’d come back too often. The free spins round can pay out big money, though it is not in itself much different from the regular game.
A definite improvement in terms of graphics and game play over the original Gold Trophy game. I hope that when Gold Trophy 3 comes out, there is at least an expanding wild or pick-em game of some kind to complement those free spins.
If you enjoy golf, why not have a quick round on this slot for yourself!
