This is an innovative and unique slot game. The strange name is a combination of energy; there are a lot of electrical sparks around, and ‘goonz’, which are little Pokémon type creatures. Instead of reels and win lines, this slot has a 5x5 grid. You need to get 3+ symbols in a row in order to win. When you do hit a winning combination, the symbols disappear, with the remaining ones falling into place. You get 1000 coins for clearing the entire grid, and clearing a column with the word ‘bonus’ on it triggers a feature game. This slot is a lot of fun, and certainly stands out compared to many other slots around at the moment.
The animations are the best part of this game. The Goonz are alien looking, with orange, green and dark versions. They all gave bug eyes and grins and pull expressions at each other. There are a different set of creatures during the bonus round. On the left of the creatures is a multiplier box, your wins are shown here, with each new win after the symbols disappear having incrementing the multiplier by 1x. On the right is the energy generator, which comes into play during the bonus feature. Music is cheerful, though nothing particularly special. There are zapping noises and small explosions to keep you entertained.
I enjoyed the bonus game, which is different enough from the main play of this slot to keep you engaged.
With no win-lines in the traditional sense, you’ll only need to decide how much you want to spend per spin in order to play. There are 5 choices, 20c, $1, $2, $10 or $40. You can either spin manually, or use the auto-spin option for up to 50 games.
The pay table does not tell the entire story for this game. The wins look low, though you need to keep in mind that you will often get 3 to 4 of them per spin, and that they will be multiplied. For example the 3rd win on a particular spin will be worth 3x what is on the table. The dark goonz creature with blue eyes is the top regular symbol, this is worth 25 times your spin for 5, and 2.5x for 4. The other creatures are worth 15x with the lightning, flames and atom symbol coming next for the smaller wins.
Plasma balls are the special symbol here, these substitute for all other symbols (no exceptions like there are in many other games) and pay 500x your bet for 5 in a row. Add to this the 1000x for clearing the entire grid and you’ll see that the wins in this game can quickly escalate.
There is a unique way of triggering this bonus round. You need to clear an entire column when the word ‘Bonus’ is written underneath. These columns are assigned randomly at the start of each spin – sometimes alone and sometimes 2 or 3 at a time.
When you clear one you are taken to a new grid, which fills with different Goonz. These start off asleep (or maybe not created yet). When you get multiple instances of the same ones on the grid, the electricity comes from the machine on the right and wakes them up. They then become colourful, and you get the appropriate prize. These are much bigger prizes than in the main game, with pay-outs for up to 10 of each of the 10 different types of creature. The top prize is 175x your spin amount for 10 of the 3 eyed beige ones.
You start with 10 spins, though 5 or more of the electricity machine symbols will trigger a second feature round – with a max of 20 rounds. This is an entertaining feature, and does have the potential for you to accumulate some big wins.
An instant hit for me, this is slot innovation in the real sense. While many software houses add videos and pick-em games on top of otherwise boring slots, this one has some brand new game play. The grid system does take a bit of getting used to, especially that the symbols have to be in straight lines to count as wins. You’ll often get the multiple wins in a row as new combinations of symbols fit together.
While the bonus round is not too frequent, this is very entertaining – and does have the potential for some big wins compared to the base game. A couple of retriggers and multiple 7+ symbols of the new creatures and you can come away with a big multiple of your spin amount.
I strongly recommend this slot – and hope we can see a lot more innovations like these from Play N Go in the future.
