So perhaps IGT’s desire to break the mold and come up with something new was what prompted them to create Silent Movie, a video slots game that appears to take place inside of an old theatre.
We can already tell that Silent Movie is going to be a great game – the loading screen looks like an old black-and-white film, complete with the jitter and artifacts that movies of the day had. The effort put into the loading screen and introduction alone did a fantastic job of getting me excited to see what was in-store, and the if the effort put into the design is indicative of the gameplay, Silent Movie will no doubt be one of the better video slots games out there.
Until The Jazz Singer came along in 1929 and changed movies forever, all films prior to this time were made completely without sound – orchestras or pianists would commonly accompany movie presentations, adding a soundtrack live in the theatre. The entire era of silent films acts as its own genre, complete with its own set of imagery, icons, actors, tropes, and more. The decision to make a video slots game based on silent films seems to be quite an interesting one, as we certainly wouldn’t have ever expected to ever play a game based on that era of film.
The presentation of this slots game is simply fantastic. It actually looks like you are inside of a classically designed theatre watching a film of old. The use of old 1920s-style fonts, recessed lighting in the reels, and curtains on the sides give this entire game an aura of class and refinement, contributing to the overall experience in a way many other video slots games don’t.
A really cool feature of the game is that the symbols utilises a number of major silent films (one I immediately recognised was the 1902 short A Trip to the Moon) – a thematically appropriate addition to the game. The interface below contains the buttons in cards that would feature text in silent films where dialogue was needed – we thought that was such a cool touch. And on top of everything, there isn’t any stutter or lag – an impressive feat given all of the animations running at once.
Silent Movie features a standard 5x3 reel and a hefty 30 paylines. Silent Movie is a game that demands big bets – the lowest coin denomination you can set is 1 unit of currency per coin, with a maximum of 20 – this allows for a maximum bet of 600 units of currency a spin!
There are wild and scatter symbols available, but the number of paylines can’t be changed. The buttons below allow you to adjust the coin size, spin the reels, activate the auto-spinner (up to 50 spins at a time!) and change the graphics settings as well.
Silent Movie is packed with ways to win. The introduction gives you the rundown as to what the game offers – tons of chances to get free spins, winnings multipliers, wild and scatter symbol, and even a bonus game! In fact, the only thing Silent Movie lacks is a progressive jackpot, which doesn’t really matter considering everything else that’s on offer.
The bonus round is triggered when you get two bonus tickets combined with a movie poster. You are taken to a screen where you can pick from one of three veiled booths. Behind them is a multiplier that you can win, plus ten free spins. The multiplier you see determines what multiplier you get when you go to the free spin reel, which is distinct from the regular reel you spin with. Wins rack up fast, and the multiplier can go even higher during the round!
Silent Movie is pretty much as good as I thought it would be. Tons of prize opportunities, great production values, high potential jackpots, and basically every feature under the sun makes Silent Movie the type of game any gambler worth their salt would love.
The high initial minimum bet of 30 coins may be off-putting to casual gamblers, but Silent Movie is clearly geared towards people who appreciate video slots games that carry a distinct classic flavour. Both the production values and the gameplay are absolutely incredible, and IGT has really shown what they are made of here. Seriously, if you can find Silent Movie you really must play it.
