Classic American TV: Beverly Hillbillies

Beverly Hillbillies – an American sitcom which aired on CBS between 1962 and 1971 is about a poor family from the country that is transferred to Beverly Hills in Hollywood after they get lucky and strike oil in their country farmland. The members of the family include Jed Clampett (JD) who is the patriarch, Elly May Clampett – the daughter of Jed, Jethro – the son of Jed’s cousin, and Daisy May Moses – Elly’s granny and Jed’s mother-in-law.

The concept of the show was that the Clampett family struck it rich by hitting oil after they allowed the OK Oil Company to drill on their land. From there, the family jumped ship and moved to Beverly Hills, California where the Clampett family purchased a mansion beside their banker -- Mr. Drysdale. The nine successful seasons saw the Clampett family try to function in a ritzy society, all the while maintaining their basic heritage. JD, the father, is an intelligent and good natured widower with little education but a strong sense of loyalty towards friends and family. The granny is seen trotting around the house, more often than not with a shotgun. Elly is JD’s beautiful daughter who loves animals and cannot cook while Jethro is the most educated man in the family as he made it past the sixth grade!

The show humorously portrays life in the 60s and leaves audiences laughing on the floor with laughter. The show ran for a magnificent 274 seasons and one episode also made it to TV Guide’s 100 best episodes of all time.
